Abstract
Examining changes from the past 25 years may help to better understand recent changes in the movement science and physical education programs at Florida State University. Prior to 1972, the division was known as the Department of Physical Education, Health Education and Recreation in the College of Education. The department had 32 faculty members. Degrees were offered at the bachelor's and master's levels in physical education and recreation, a doctoral degree was offered in physical education, and a certification program was offered in health education. In 1972, the College of Education was reorganized from departments in to divisions, with physical, art, and industrial arts education in the Division of Human Performance, and recreation and health education, along with several other clinical and professional programs, in the Division of Professional and Clinical Services. A new graduate degree program in movement science was approved in 1973. Both master's and PhD degrees, with majors in exercise physiology and motor learning, were included in the movement science program. At the same time, two new majors-administration, supervision, and curriculum, and transportation and safety education-were approved in the physical education program. In 1975, the Division of Human Performance merged with the Area of Professional and Clinical Programs, which included counseling, health, and rehabilitation, special education, leisure services and studies, movement science education, and physical education. In 1977, the College of Education was reorganized into departments once again, with movement science and physical education in one department and health education and leisure studies in the Department of Human Services and Studies. The Department of Movement Science and Physical Education included 14 fulltime and 3 part-time faculty and offered a bachelor's degree in physical education and master's and doctoral degrees in both movement science and physical education.
