Abstract

The current decline in library budgets and increase in journal acquisition costs affects all fields. This paper's purpose is twofold: to provide background on the widely misunderstood field of health, physical education, recreation and dance; and to describe considerations for selecting and canceling serial subscriptions in that area. Emphasis is on the breadth of the field and the resulting uniqueness of individual departments, a condition that makes questionable the use of master lists of desirable holdings. Strategies for retrenchment, based on experience at the University of North Dakota, are presented.
