Abstract

Taking as the starting material the Aurivillius oxide Bi 2SrNb 2O 9 , it has been demonstrated for the first time that the ( Bi 2O 2 ) 2+ layers can be doped with the Pb 2+ cation, which also possesses a stereochemically active lone pair. Samples of composition Bi 2−xPb xSrNb 2O y have been prepared and yield a solid solution over the entire range 0≤x≤2. The substitution of Pb 2+ is accompanied by the occurrence of oxygen vacancies, in order to compensate the reduced cation charge.
