Abstract

Compound epithets were widely used in English prose and poetry in works of Shakespeare, Milton or Keats. Still, the usage of this stylistic device in 21 st century English literature remains obscure and the body of work dealing with this problem is unsatisfactory. In order to see whether this powerful stylistic device is still embraced, three novels by Zadie Smith, a well-recognized 21 st century English writer, are analyzed. The aim of the paper is to single out the instances of metaphor-, metonymy- and simile-based compound epithets and understand whether they are typical of the writer’s style.
