Abstract

The seminar was organized by the Mathematics Working Group of the European Society for Engineering Education (SEFI), in Plymouth, England in March 1988, and was jointly sponsored by Plymouth Polytechnic and RNEC Manadon. This paper contains a review of the seminar together with an abstract of those papers not sufficiently well covered in the review. The existing working groups in probability and statistics and in linear algebra made good progress and outlined a Core Curriculum in mathematics for engineers, whereas the Mathematical Analysis Group, meeting for the first time, established a general Core Curriculum framework with a hierarchical basis. Whilst participants at the seminar were able to take part in the activities, it is a major objective of the organizers to communicate the work of the seminar to a wider audience. As in the past, this objective has been achieved by the courtesy of the founding editor of this journal Professor A. C. Bajpai OBE.
