Abstract

Introduction: Female athletes have long been excluded from exercise participation, training and performance research due to the complexities associated with natural hormonal fluctuations. Consequently, the menstrual cycle (MC) and the degree to which it impacts the athlete remains understudied. Despite women reporting that the MC affects their ability to train, compete and perform, objective performance analysis has largely failed to identify why this is the case. This study aims to investigate the female athlete experience of exercise participation, training and perceived performance throughout the MC, including identifying barriers, if any, to discussing the topic with coaching and support staff.
