Abstract

A high frequency (trω/KB>10K) phonon incident on the free surface of superfluid4He can either reflect, quantum evaporate, or create ripplons. Using a beam of high frequency phonons, we have measured these transition probabilities. The probability of specular reflection is<0.03, and our best, estimate for the probability of evaporation is ≈0.1. Most of the high frequency phonons apparently undergo processes that create ripplons.
