Abstract

For the relatively new subspecialty of pediatric ophthalmology fathered by Frank Costenbader, MD, a spate of new books is appearing on this subject. The ramifications are naturally large, including diseases found most commonly but not exclusively in children, and accordingly this textbook is written by 29 authors. It sets out the practical experience of the staff of the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, rather than a historical review of scientific studies and controlled surveys. In fact, the easily readable text does not document the source of much information but only includes a selected bibliography at the end of each chapter. The general tone of the book is set by the dedication: "This book is dedicated to all the children." Most chapters begin with an elementary description of embryology, anatomy, and physiology that would be of value to a pediatrician. The book omits few, if any, ocular diseases in children,
