Abstract

Evidence is considered for the use of the River Don above Doncaster for navigation before statutory improvement began in 1726. The conclusion is that, while earlier claims for navigation in the Middle Ages are unfounded (as they appear to be for other rivers), there is some evidence for the occasional use of the Don in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.
