Abstract
Results are presented from an experimental investigation of the load and displacement characteristics of the Herring-bone Grooved Gas journal Bearings. The attitude and the bearing stiffness are measured for various rotations, clearances and groove depths, and the experimentally obtained characteristics are compared with the theoretically predicted characteristics. It is shown that the experimental results have good agreement with the theoretical prediction. But the tangential component of bearing stiffness is relatively larger than that predicted, so the herring-bone grooves are not so effective for pumping the fluid as the theoretical prediction indicates.
