Abstract

A study was made of the influence of the polarity of solvents and monomer units of polymers on the excluded volume of poly-2,5- and poly-3,4-dichlorostyrene (P-2,5-DCS and P-3,4-DCS) and that of their apolar analogue, poly-2,4-dimethylstyrene. It was found that the polarity of bonds in the monomer units of P-2,5-DCS and P-3,4-DCS (and the dissimilar positioning of these bonds) have a non-uniform effect on the magnitude of β observed for these polymers in solution.
