Abstract

The final Great Hall at Bolingbroke Castle was probably constructed in the late 14th or early 15th century. The hall was partly demolished in the early 17th century, although its north-east end was retained until the later 17th century, perhaps used to provide accommodation for the auditors of the Duchy of Lancaster. This article deals with this final phase in the life of the castle and contains an analysis of the 16th- to 17th-century pottery from the castle, which is of importance in the study of early post-Medieval ceramics in the East Midlands.
