Abstract
This note announces that the stability region of the MacCormack scheme for the scalar advection equation u t = au x + bu y is exactly given by a Δt Δx 2 3 + b Δt Δy 2 3 ≥ 1 where Δ t , Δ x and Δ y are the grid distances. This improves upon the result obtained by Wendroff [1] and corrects a mistake in it.
