Abstract

This review paper explores the evolution of smart cities, focusing on the integration of technology, governance, and sustainable development. It examines the historical origins of smart cities, the role of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs), and the importance of effective governance structures in urban planning. Case studies illustrate successful initiatives while highlighting challenges like rapid urbanization and technological innovation. The review emphasizes the need for holistic approaches that integrate environmental, social, and economic sustainability principles. Implications for future research and practice include innovative financing mechanisms and strengthened stakeholder collaboration. Recommendations for policymakers, urban planners, and other stakeholders stress prioritizing sustainability, inclusive decision-making processes, and investment in resilient infrastructure. By embracing these principles, cities can advance towards a more prosperous, equitable, and sustainable future.
