Abstract

Computer-based communications technology such as the Internet and the World Wide Web are having a great impact on the learning of foreign languages. In the latter half of the 1990s there has been growing activity among CALL developers working in the area of Japanese as a foreign language to utilize network computing technology. This paper will review the evolution of Internet-based projects in Japanese CALL and suggest future directions in which this field may develop, based on both emerging network technology and learning theory.
