Abstract

The aim of the research is to find out and evaluate the opinions of the lecturers and students regarding the “conducting skills” for the orchestra and possible instrument ensembles in the schools fort he course of “Orchestra and Conducting” in the music education branches of the education faculties. The method of the research is descriptive research with quantitative and qualitative dimensions that are based on an eclectic approach. The data which is needed for the analysis of the research problem is gathered by literature survey ,questionnaires, and constructed interview. The population of the research is the students and lecturers of “Orchestra and Conducting” courses in Music Education Branches of Fine Arts Education Departments in Education Faculties of the universities in Turkey. The sample of the research is composed of the lecturers who taught “Orchestra and Conducting” courses in 2006-2007 academic year and who taught these courses in the previous years, and last year students who attended this courses in Music Education Branches of Education Faculties. The data gathered from this study are compared and evaluated according to different variables. The analysis within this research find that the lecturers devote too less time for activities of conducting techniques and skills.
