Abstract

The Small GEO Platform currently developed by a OHB System AG leaded consortia in the European Space Agency (ESA) Program ARTES-11 addresses the lower mass segment of communication satellites smaller than 3000 kg in to Geostationary Transfer Orbit (GTO) or smaller than 1600 kg direct into Geostationary O rbit (GSO). OHB looks back to successful small satellite developments and demonst rated a unique competence with the SAR-Lupe radar reconnaissance program consisting of 5 satellites for the German Ministry of Defense. The platform is designed for the commercial and institutional telecommunication market. Three Ku-Band BSS reference missions, Large (L) with 40 active TWTA, Medium (M) with 32 TWTA and Small (S) with 20 TWTA have been defined to show potential applications of the LUXOR platform and its corresponding launcher options for GTO or direct GSO injection. The design of the platform is modular, flexible and scalable to serve various payloads under 4 kW payload power and 400 kg payload mass. The modular approach offers parallel integration to achieve a t argeted recurring delivery time of 24 month. The LUXOR platform components are mainly based on flight proven technologies and a long term design target is to become an ITAR free product to limit schedule risks. The launch of the first mission and in orbit demonstrat ion is scheduled to the beginning of year 2011. The platform is designed to be compatible at minimum to the GTO launchers: Ariane 5 (secondary passenger under Sylda), Soyuz GSC (form Guiana Space Centre) as potential backup, LandLaunch and Proton from Baikonour, as well as Atlas V. Further potential future GTO launchers like GSLV MkII and MkIII, Falcon 9, etc. are addressed. Additionally, the LUXOR platform offers direct injection capability by excluding the CPPS from the propulsion module to offer a lower platfor m price, lower platform dry mass and an extensive payload accommodation volume of 4 cubes with dimensions of 0.95 m x 0.9 m x 1.5 m. This makes LUXOR the first Western GEO satellite platform capable of Direct Injection with EPPS only.
