Abstract

AbstractA survey of the literature on the leaves of Clausena anisata is given. Distillation of the leaves yields 3.4‐7.1% of oil, the young leaves as a rule yielding a higher percentage of oil than the old ones. The chief constituent of the oil is anethole, varying from 74.3‐89.6% of the oil. On cooling, the oil solidifies. Leaves picked every month of the year have been distilled in order to obtain information about the seasonal variation of the oil and anethole contents; also the constants of each oil have been determined. The variation was shown to be small, both with regard to yield and the anethole content. A diagram has been drawn in which the variation of oil and anethole content are plotted. The economic prospect of this oil is discussed.
