Abstract

Abstract The equilibrium decomposition curve of AuPt solid solutions has been determined by high-temperature X-ray diffractometry and shown to follow strictly the rule of straight line diameter. No complete mutual solubility region and no critical point have been found on the decomposition curve up to 1300 °C. The subsolidus part of the phase diagram obtained in the present work differs substantially from that accepted at present. The lattice parameter of the gold-enriched phase has been shown to remain constant over the range from 500 °C to 1200 °C. Using the straight line diameter the temperature was found at which pure gold and platinum should be at equilibrium on the decomposition curve, Tv = −140 °C. The minimum in the temperature dependence of the thermoelectromotive force (TEMF) of an AuPt thermocouple has been shown to correspond to the above temperature. A similar minimum in TEMF was found earlier in the AgCu system at Tv = 380 °C.
