Abstract

The emission spectrum of the Bi 2 molecule excited by irradiating bismuth vapor in a discharge tube by a high power microwave generator revealed the existence of three new band systems in the following regions: (i) 8820-8030 Å (system G → A), (ii) 7050-6730 Å (system H → A) and (iii) 6570-6290 Å (system I → A). In addition, the extensive A- X system which was mainly studied in absorption by earlier workers was also obtained in emission in the region 7980-4830 Å. Vibrational analysis was carried out for each of the four systems mentioned here. The emission data of the A- X system are in general agreement with the absorption data. The three new band systems are found to have a common lower electronic state which is the upper state of the A- X system.
