Abstract

Purpose. In this article I examine the elements of theatrical performance in shows created by the fans of Lechia Gdansk during the football matches. Methodology. I compare the shows created by football fans and the construction of the football stadium with theatrical spectacle and construction of the theatre. Finding. A show created by Polish football fans has many features of a theatrical performance, such as stage design involving certain stage props, choreography, chants sung by a group of people reminding the Greek chorus, costumes, moreover, the informal atmosphere allows them to freely express their emotions during a match, and experience a kind of catharsis. Practical values. This analysis helps to understand motivations and needs of the football fans subculture. Results. The show created by football fans cannot be considered a theatrical performance, as people who come to the theater agree to take the role of silent observers, while and at the stadium fans want to be heard and noticed.
