Abstract

The introduction of the large magnet for the removal of pieces of steel or iron from the interior of the eye, which we owe to the enterprise of Prof. O. Haab of Zurich, provides us with an instrument of much value in a large proportion of such cases. It is of no value whatever in the cases where the foreign body in the interior of the eye is non-magnetic; fortunately such cases are not the most common. Haab's interest in strong magnets for this purpose was engaged by the first case which he reports (Trans. Oph. Soc., Heidelberg, 1892, p. 162). The patient was a woman 32 years of age. On June 10, 1892, a piece of steel passed through the cornea and anterior chamber and lodged in the posterior part of the lens projecting into the vitreous.
