Abstract

Cases have been recorded in which pieces of iron or steel have been tolerated in the eye for a considerable length of time, some being encysted and remaining quiet, but they are so rare that we can not attach any weight to them regarding prognosis or treatment. We must assume that a foreign body in the interior of the eye is sure of its destruction, if left alone, and, in all probability, of causing sympathetic inflammation and loss of the fellow eye. The removal of the foreign body, however, will by no means insure the saving of the eye. A foreign body, when extracted, may be so large and the destruction so great as to insure loss of the eye.
