Abstract

The quadrupole coupling tensors at the four magnetically inequivalent olefinic deuterons in potassium hydrogen maleate have been determined. The quadrupole coupling constant is 176.4 ± 0.3 kHz and the asymmetry parameter 0.035 ± 0.003. The largest (absolute value) principal component is along the CD bond direction (±0.3°). The intermediate component is near to the normal to the molecular plane. Line splittings have been observed and interpreted in terms of the dipolar interaction of a particular deuteron with a proton from a neighboring molecule.
