Abstract

It is shown that the elastic modes of cables can be different from those of taut strings. For certain values of the physical parameters frequency coalescence or the so-called phenomenon of frequency avoidance is observed, accompanied by substantial changes in the mode shapes. An asymptotic solution is used to explore in detail the properties of the elastic modes of horizontal and inclined cables of small sag to span ratio.
