Abstract
The five independent elastic constants of the hexagonal intermetallic compound Ag 2Al were determined by means of the ultrasonic pulse-echo technique over the temperature interval 77° to 700°K. The values obtained at 298°K are: c 11 = 1·415 , c 33 = 1·685 , c 44 = 0·341 c 66 = 0·284 , and c 13 = 0.747 , all expressed in units of 10 12 dyn/cm 2. The linear compressibility parallel to the c-axis, calculated from these elastic constants is smaller than the compressibility perpendicular to the c-axis, in agreement with the less-than-ideal c a ratio. Extrapolating the elastic constants to 0°K, the Debye temperature was calculated to be 276°K.
