Abstract
Single crystals of cesium have been grown by a modified Bridgman technique. The adiabatic elastic constants were measured at 4.2° and 78°K by an ultrasonic pulse echo technique. The constant pressure temperature dependence of the elastic constants (d C/d T) p was also measured. The measured elastic constants at 78°K are as follows: C = 1.48 C' = 0.205 C n = 3.74 in units of 10 10 dyn-cm −2. The notation C = C 44 and C n = ( C 11 + C 12 + 2 C 44)/2 is used. The me shear stiffnesses are interpreted in terms of the electrostatic contribution to the shear stiffnesses calculated by Fuchs. The elastic constants at 4.2°K were used to calculate both the Debye temperature, which was compared with existing calorimetric data, and the adiabatic bulk modulus, which was compared with the isothermal compressional data.
