Abstract

Objective To observe the efficacy of povidone iodine in the treatment of perianal infection associated with chemotherapy in patients with leukemia.Methods 40 patients with perianal infection secondary to chemotherapy were randomly divided into study group and control group.After chemotherapy,both groups received 1∶5000potassium solution for sitz bath for 20 min in the morning and evening and after defecation.Povidone iodine ointment was additionally applied on the surrounding area of the anus in the study group 3 times daily for 30 days.Results The overall effectiveness rate was markedly higher in the study group than in the control group ( 100% vs.80%,P<0.05 ).The duration of therapy was significantly shorter in the study group than in the control group [( 14 ± 3.57 ) d vs.( 27.45 ± 4.73 ) d,P < 0.01].Conclusions Povidone iodine for the prophylaxis and treatment of perianal infection in patients with leukemia is efficacious,simple,and economical.
