Abstract

Objective To compare the efficacy of laparoscopic appendectomy and traditional open appendectomy for acute appendicitis. Methods 168 patients with acute appendicitis who had been treated during the period of June 2009 to July 2011 were randomly divided into laparoscopic appendectomy group and traditional open surgery group,84 for each group. After surgery, the efficacy was assessed inthe two groups.Surgical duration, time to anal exhaust, intraoperative blood loss, number of patients with complications, and surgical incision sizes were observed. Results The efficacy did not differ significantly between the two groups.Laparoscopic appendectomy group was markedly superior to traditional open surgery group in time to anal exhaust, blood loss, number of patients with complications, and incision sizses, but surgical duration was longer. Conclusions Both surgical procedures have their own advantages.Laparoscopic appendectomy is less invasive and has quicker recovery and fewer complications. It is an ideal procedure.
