Abstract

The chapter reviews the effects of the finite element method (FEM) models on the dynamic property and response analyses of transmission towers. The chapter analyzes the effects of different constructions and rigidities of tower joints on the dynamic properties of a transmission tower, and discusses the type of element members in FEM. The effects of different finite element models on the modal analyses of a transmission tower are small to lower order modes but may increase with the order of modes. The eccentricities of connections have certain effects on local modes but a slight effect on global modes. The space truss model is suitable to analyze the global modes of the tower, and the mix element model or the space frame model is suitable to analyze the local modes. The dynamic responses to the breakage of a wire or a lightning conductor solved by using geometrically linear or geometrically nonlinear technique are very close to each other, but there are some errors among the solutions from different finite models.
