Abstract

We examine the role of pion-exchange diagrams in the nuclear matrix elements which enter the 2 vββ decay. The corresponding effective operators are constructed using PCAC and soft-pion theorems. The matrix elements of these operators are evaluated in the case of the 48 Ca → 48 Ti decay. We find that these effects are small and cannot possibly account for the discrepancy between the shell-model results and the experimental values.
