Abstract

AbstractThe toughness of series of submerged arc welds with added Mo, Ti or Zr were measured using Charpy-V specimens. The toughness results were analysed using microstructural changes reported earlier, along with hardness and tensile testing, measurements of the compositions and size distribution of inclusions, and the fraction of other minor phases. SEM examination of fracture surfaces showed that in some cases both intergranular fracture and details of the acicular ferrite structure were detrimental. Auger analysis showed segregation of P, C, Nand Mo to brittle prior austenite grain boundaries in one weld.
