Abstract

1. The effect of gibberellic acid (GA) and two synthetic plant growth retardants was tested on the heat of the isolated and perfused ventricle of the hard shelled clam, Mercenaria mercenaria. 2. Twenty-five per cent inhibition of the beat was obtained with 30 μM GA, 160 μM N-dimethylamino succinamic acid (B-9), 7 μM (2-chloroethyl) trimethyl-ammonium chloride (CCC) and 2 nM acetylcholine chloride (ACh). 3. CCC is a quaternary ammonium compound while B-9 is a tertiary ammonium compound and GA has no nitrogen.
