Abstract

The effects of three types of clove ether-containing anesthetics, namely clove oil (CO), eugenol (EU) and isoeugenol (ISO) on water quality and nitrogen excretion in simulated transportation of Kenyi cichlid Maylandia lombardoi were investigated. The results showed at a concentration of 12 μl/l, CO, EU and ISO effectively reduced ammonia excretion of fish and mitigated pH changes (p < 0.05). ISO was the best efficient anesthetic to control water quality during simulated transportation. ISO delayed ammonia excretion of fish within 48 h but it produces the side effect with increasing water turbidity.
