Abstract

Objective To evaluate the effects of amniotic membrane implantation in trabeculectomy for the treatment of glaucoma. Methods Seventy-six eyes of 60 patients with glaucoma in our department were randomly divided into the amniotic membrane group (38 eyes of 31 cases) and the control group (38 eyes of 29 cases). The amniotic membrane group was treated by trabeculectomy combined with amniotic membrane implantation and the control group accepted trabeculectomy. The postoperative intraocular pressure (IOP) and the filtering bleb in two groups were compared and analyzed. Results The IOP was controlled in 36 eyes (94.74%) of the amniotic membrane group and 32 eyes (84.21%) of the control group. The difference was statistically significant (x2 =15.36,P <0.05).The functional filtering bleb was formed in 33 eyes (86.84%) of the amniotic membrane group and 25 eyes (65.79%) of the control group. The difference was statistically significant (x2 =12.07,P < 0.05).Conclusion Amniotic membrane implantation in trabeculectomy has better surgical effects than simple trabeculectomy in the treatment of glaucoma. Key words: Membrane, amniotic; Trabeculectomy; Glaucoma
