Abstract
Finite element analysis software, ANSYS, was used to analyse the stress characteristics of the crotch region of an A-type, super-high, thin-walled pier. The effect of the structural form of the pier’s crotch region on the local stress field at the beam joint of the pier was evaluated to reveal that the connecting part of the crotch region of the pier satisfied bearing capacity requirements. The stress distribution along each folding line segment chamfer was explained. The principal tensile stress around the lower opening was far smaller than that around the upper opening. This structural form can provide a reference for the design and construction of similar bridge piers.
