Abstract

Abstract Using potassium alum crystals shaken for different durations as seeds, the number N of nuclei produced was correlated with the number of seeds N s and the seed diameter d s. This result was coupled with the density of alum particles adhering to the surface of the seed crystals. It was found that the secondary nucleation was principally due to alum particles broken off from the original crystals by the shaking operation.
