  • The values of breathing frequency, tidal volume and ventilatory equivalent are dependent on the horse locomotion mechanics in individual types of exercise

  • Further 6 horses selected from this set were subjected to further exercise (1 500 m) on a following day, the speed corresponding to 70 % of the maximum work effort of every horse (WE%max)

Summary

Introduction

Hanak J.: The Effect of Stepwise Exercise on Ventilatory and Respiratiory Functions in Sport Horses. Tidal volume, pulmonary ventilation, oxygen consumption, carbon dioxide output and the so called ventilatory equivalent and respiratory quotient were radiotelemetrically studied in 12 horses, ranging in age from 4 to 12 years, at stepwise exercise. Efforts of recent years to increase specific performance of sport and race horses all over the world have necessitated well-intentioned attitudes towards means and methods of· a training process. This progress calls for an improvement of veterinary control in the field of preventive diagnostics, therapy and control directly in race and sport stables.
