Abstract

Compartmental analysis has been applied to the kinetics of the translocation through isolated rat intestine of p-aminohippurate, a freely diffusible substance, and of Xylose, a substance whose transport is carrier mediated. The effect of various drugs on the transfer constants of the model, on the mean transit time, and on the total volume of the translocated fluid has been analyzed. The drugs were: Ethylendiamine tetracetic acid disodium salt, Phloridzin, Sodium Azide 2.4-Dinotrophenol, Sodium iodoacetate, Sodium fluoride, Tetracycline, Dimethyl Sulfoxide, Glucose, Potassium Penicillin G, Ouabain and Sodium Salicylate. Figs. 3–6 show the effects of these substances on the parameters investigated.
