Abstract

Soft lasers provide a special place in dentistry. Because of those biostimulative effects, soft lasers are used at almost all painful conditions and diseases. On the other hand, a periodontal abscess is a localized purulent infection of periodontal tissues, as a common clinical feature in patients with periodontitis. Therapy of periodontal abscess is drainage with oral administration of antibiotics and metronidazole. The aim of this work was to examine the efficiency of using soft laser in the therapy of periodontal abscess. Investigation was carried out in 50 patients with periodontal abscess. Standard therapeutic methods (drainage and administration of metronidazole) were used in 25 patients. In addition to this procedure, other 25 patients were exposed to the laser radiation at five seances in duration of laser radiation of 4 min. By visual-analogous scale for pain, we “measured” the pain from the first day of treatment. The results showed that the laser therapy had very good effects on the pain and other symptoms of periodontal abscess. In conclusion, soft laser showed positive and good effects in the treatment of periodontal abscess. We recommend soft lasers in therapy of periodontal abscess because of their biostimulative effects, particularly the analgetic effect.
