Certain neurogenic degenerative diseases in Nigeria are associated with optic atrophy and perceptive deafness. It has been suggested that a high dietary cyanide intake in a malnourished population might be a contributory factor. In the present studies organ cultures of the fowl embryo otocyst were exposed to various concentrations of sodium cyanide and the ensuing degenerative changes on nerve tissue and other cells are described.
