Abstract

The embrittled paper sheet is the perfect candidate for the study of crack roughness effects on crack mechanics. The paper shows an ideal linear elastic uniaxial stress strain response and possesses perfectly brittle fracture. The standard specimen thickness is always at least 100 times less than the specimen width so that under uniaxial extension a two dimensional state of generalized plane stress is always hold in experiments. The rupture lines in paper sheets possess self affine geometry within a wide range of length scale.
