Abstract

Pig eyes and retrobulbar tissues were used in an experimental investigation of the effects on the sound field caused by the sclera with the optic nerve, the sclera with some retrobulbar tissues attached to it, and the retrobulbar tissues alone. The optic nerve had a slight or considerable attenuating effect. The attenuation produced by retrobulbar tissues, which included the optic nerve, fat and muscular tissues, etc., was considerably stronger than that caused by the optic nerve alone. After the sound had travelled through the retrobulbar tissues the sound field was not only strongly attenuated but often also very irregular.
