Abstract

SUMMARYIn order to find the relative reactivity of two potent chromosome breaking nitroso compounds. NMU and MNG, under varied conditions of temperature and pH, studies on chromosome structure, mitotic activity and spectrum of chromosomal aberrations were undertaken in Allium cepa. The optimum mutagenic conditions were observed at 30°C and pH 5.2. Both chemicals showed maximum interaction with these two modifying factors, thus suggesting that the mutagenic efficiency of these nitroso compounds can be experimentally manipulated by adjusting the temperature and pH at the time of treatments. For each genotype-treatment interaction the optimum effectivity has to be worked out.
