Abstract

An experiment investigated the effects of prior familiarization with sucrose on the extinction of a sucrose aversion. Rats received either sucrose or no sucrose experience prior to conditioning of an aversion to sucrose. As in earlier studies, familiarized subjects took longer to develop an aversion to sucrose paired with illness than did the novel rats. After reaching suppression criteria, an equal number of rats were extinguished under either a two bottle or a one bottle procedure. Rats extinguished more rapidly under the forced than the free choice procedure, while sucrose familiarization had no effect on extinction rates. These results indicate that familiarization training only affects the acquisition of a taste aversion and not the rate of extinction.
