Abstract
Single crystals oriented at [ 1 23] of the Ni-rich and Al-rich Ni 3Al both with addition of 1 at% boron, deformed at room temperature, were studied using transmission electron microscopy ( TEM). The dislocation structures in both samples are dominated by long screw segments (KW locks) and short near-edge dipoles. The closing ends of the short dipoles were shown to be on the primary cross-slip (1 1 1) plane and on the cube cross-slip (010) plane. The energy of the APB faults on (111) and (010) was deduced. The strengthening effect of boron in Ni 3Al is discussed in correlation to the observed dislocation structures.
