Abstract

The frequent use of vagotomy in the treatment of duodenal ulcer1o, regional ileitis6 • 7, and ulcerative colitisSIO has brought up the question of possible undesirable side effects of vagal interruptionu14• This problem has been adequately studied for gastric1o-17 and biliary secretion1S22 but the results of vagisection on pancreatic secretion in man remain to be elucidated. Indeed, the vagal mechanism of pancreatic secretion and its significance in human digestion is still obscure2329 • 33 i most of what is accepted today has been inferred from animal experimentation. The following is a report of an investigation of the influence of vagal stimulation on pancreatic secretion in man, with and without prior vagal interruption.
