Abstract
Antidepressants are commonly prescribed to women of reproductive age. Three classes of antidepressants stimulate production of allopregnanolone, which enhances the activity of GABA, a potent inhibitory neurotransmitter in the hypothalamus. These changes may suppress GnRH release leading to dysregulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis. However, research on the impact of antidepressants on ovulation and fertility is lacking.
