Abstract

Operant conditioning has been found by Barton (1970) to be effective in the development of language skills in the retarded. This has also been reported by Newman. Whorton and Simpson (1977) who found that self stimulatory verbalizations were significantly diminished by the application of overcorrecting techniques. In a study on the control of selective echolia, Tucker, O’Dell and Suib (1978) found that it was more useful for the subject to be taught a replacement for the inappropriate behaviour. This was a workable method in terms of manpower and time involved, two factors on which the overcorrection procedure draw heavily.
