Abstract

1. 1. With snail foot muscle extract ( Semisulcospira libertina) as a source of antigen, optimal immunoelectrophoretic results (6–9 precipitin systems; usable ascites 19–100 per cent, average 73 per cent) were obtained with hyperimmune mouse ascites fluid produced by intraperitoneal injections of two doses of 0·5–0·25 mg protein per dose. 2. 2. Further reduction in concentration resulted in fewer precipitin systems (2–6), and less usable fluid (4–56 per cent, average 32 per cent). 3. 3. Two precipitin systems resulted with ascites from injections with the lowest dose (0·008 mg/injection); however, these were the least taxon specific when comparing distantly related taxa. 4. 4. It was not possible to discriminate between S. libertina and S. niponica by reduction of antigen injected.
